ReSeaCycle BC emerged from my passion for marine conservation. In my final year of studying Marine Biology, I completed a research project on ghost gear that opened my eyes to the scale of the problem. Around that same time, I started noticing ropes, netting, foam floats, and prawn traps in the garbage bins at my local marina. These items, often made from plastics that don’t break down, were headed straight to the landfill. That’s when the idea for a dedicated bin for marine plastic recycling began to take shape.
Mission
ReSeaCycle BC’s mission is short and sweet: to divert plastic waste from landfills, keep our shorelines clean, and to support the transformation of marine materials into reusable products, art, or other repurposed uses.
We’re currently in the pilot phase and, thanks to growing community interest and CRD funding through the Rethink Waste Community Grant, we're expanding our bin initiative to more locations.
Action
For this pilot, we are testing the waters at locations where these materials tend to accumulate - marinas! After the pilot is completed, we’ll gather baseline data from each bin haul to assess the volume and types of materials collected. This will help us estimate how much waste has been diverted from the landfill.
